Three myths about sunglasses
Myth 1
Dark glasses = high protection
The tint of the lenses only protects against glare. The UV protection filter is just as invisible as the UV light itself. Dark glasses without UV protection even facilitate the incidence of light into the eye, as the pupil dilates in the dark and thus more high-energy radiation can penetrate the eye.
Myth 2
Sunglasses prevent the positive
effects of sunlight
Daylight and sunlight control the release of certain
hormones and, among other things, the day-night rhythm. Sunglasses filter
ultraviolet light in the wavelength range from 100 to 400 nanometers (nm). For
the biorhythm, however, light from the turquoise-blue spectrum is important.
This is also recorded with sunglasses, as it is in the range of 440-480 nm.
And: even on cloudy days, we benefit from the entire spectrum of daylight.
Myth 3
Those who wear sunglasses damage
their eyes
Anyone who constantly wears very dark glasses around the
clock will certainly simulate a kind of mole-like cave life for their eyes. But
if you wear sunglasses with 100 percent UV protection, customized by an
optician, on sunny days, during outdoor sports, on the water or in the mountains,
you are definitely doing your eyes good. The lenses ensure glare-free vision
and filter high-energy UV radiation that can damage the retina in particular.
Although the eye has its own protective mechanisms, these are limited.
UV protection for the eyes is particularly important for children, as the lens of their eyes is still very transparent to radiation. Damage from sunlight often only gradually becomes noticeable after years. Too much UV light can lead to serious eye diseases such as cataracts or macular degeneration. In the short term, sunlight, which is reflected, for example, by sand or snow, can lead to painful inflammation of the conjunctiva or cornea.
